Probably a little late here, but it seems like political or social interpretations of Duchamp and his work are always a bit of a streach. I understand this is the academic trend but a good reading and re-reading of Dialogues with Marcel Duchamp by Cabanne reveal him as utterly apolitical and gently mocking science (along with sex and everything else). I'd go right to Duchamp in Cabanne and draw my own conclusions without relying on existing scholorship. Also, don't fall for the assertion of performance artists who use bodily fluids and excrement that Fountain somehow provided and antecendant idea for this. This is totally ridiculous. Duchamp's reaction to traditional art is exactly synonomous in our time to the Sex Pistols reaction to traditional rock-n-roll. Now there is something to think about and explore...
