Apart from some occasional references to Marcel's
notion of the artist seeming to act as a
"mediumistic being", I am anaware of any serious
analyses of this 1957 lecture. However, his
contribution on that occasion is very much in
keeping with other comments he made (eg, Steefel)
about the artist's lack of control of creation.
Various commentators have tended to focus on the
notion of the viewer completing the creative act
independent of the artist's intentions. Which is
apt. But I think there are other dimensions too.
For example, Marcel's idea that his "art
coefficient" generates both unexpressed intentions
and unintended expressions has generally been
overlooked.
