Dear William,
I was very interested to read your perspective on the importance of time and chess. . . thanks for giving me your time. I have come to understand that Duchamp's interest in chess is closely related to his investigations into time, 4th or nth dimensions. A time outside of our experience. Poincaré commonly used chess to explain and represent this time and space shift into the nth dimension. I see Duchamp's "Portrait of Chess Players" as testament to this shift. . . a visualisation of this shift away from our experience of time or 'retinal' experience. . . and the experience of timelessness while playing a good game. To a lesser degree I see this time shift present in "The Chess Game" (1910), the figures seem to be frozen in 'chess' time and space, a time outside of the seconds and minutes of common experience.
tell me your thoughts on this
Sorry about my delay in replying
