I am a graduate student working in sculptural relief painting. I would
like to create a 7'x 5' sculpture based on Nude decending a staircase
using only the nude (yellow-gold)image, eliminating the background.
My advisor is all for this attempt (I am combining the questions I have
of working monochromatically as well as including linear elements in
my work - the painting has taught me much!) but I have been advised
by others that creating this in a 3-D painting would be 'blasphemous'
to say the least. I feel that it would be a credit to Duchamp and, in
a way, a carrying on of one of his traditions of taking old paintings and playing
with them in his own way. I am hoping to either find an M. Duchamp official
site to gain permission (and hold that up to the other professors who
do not wish to see me create this piece) or simply get some advice on the
